Friend

Days, weeks, even months before starting High School, I was already thinking about the changes and unexpected turn of events that might take place. During my first day as freshman, despite my careful calculations, I ended up with a male seatmate. I used to be difficult when it came to boys, primarily rooting from the bullying I experienced from the boys in my class during Elementary, so I was hoping, wishing, praying, to have a female seatmate. Apparently, I have a knack for attracting misfortune.

My new seatmate was a boy, about two to three inches shorter than me. He was VERY pale, and ridiculously shy. He refused to meet my eyes, and never started a conversation with me until I did it first. When I asked for his name, he said it VERY silently, I barely even heard it. I used to think that I'd never get along well with someone who has a personality so different from mine, but our awkward little friendship didn't stay awkward for long.

He became the ever-so-loyal seatmate who lets me copy his homework whenever I forget (or rather, neglect) to do mine. He'd copy from my paper during English and Science tests, and I'd copy from his paper during Algebra and History tests. Whenever one of us has a crush, the other would give (mostly useless) advice. He's a musician, I'm a painter. He's quite feminine, I'm quite masculine. He sucks at English, I rule at English. He's awesome at math, I just plain suck at math.

Eventually, he grew taller, and now he's more than five inches taller than me. The shy freshman suddenly became the senior playboy. His soft, feminine voice eventually toned down into a low baritone. Instead of looking down when I talk to him, I now look up. And instead of a seatmate, he's now my first love.
